The Shadow Riders

Pitman's Freight Room, 94 New Salem Street, Laconia, NH

The idea behind the Shadow Riders took root when guitarists Bruce Marshall and Chuck Farrell joined forces and formed a band in 2014. With a shared love of Southern Rock and the Blues they decided to do some shows performing the music of the Marshall Tucker Band, one of the top groups in the US in their heyday. Of particular note is the fact that lead vocalist Bruce Marshall played with Toy Caldwell, the founder, lead guitarist and primary songwriter of the original Marshall Tucker Band, in ’89 and ’90, shortly after Caldwell left the original group. This gives the band a unique insight on the music and how it was played, recorded and sold to the public.

The Shadow Riders is a name Toy Caldwell used for his backing group for a time and the title of one of his songs. Along with a new stellar 6 piece ensemble, the Shadow Riders perform hits like “Can’t You See’, “Heard it in a Love Song” and “Fire on the Mountain.” You’ll hear other popular tunes like “Take the Highway”, “This Ol Cowboy”, “Blue Ridge Mountain Sky” and some “deep cuts” as well. Marshall Tucker were known for their innovative melding of Country Blues, Southern Rock, Western Swing and Jazz. The Shadow Riders enthusiasm for this music is infectious, the stage show is engaging as they pay tribute to an iconic American Group.

Chuck Farrell, Lead and Slide guitar. (Peacheaters, Jon Butcher)

Tim Archibald, Bass. (Peter Wolf Band, RTZ)

DENNY BREAU - www.dennybreau.com

Denny is a triple threat: a consummate picker, evocative songwriter, and a singer with a voice that is warm and inviting but completely unpretentious much like the singer himself, according to Lucky Clark. Mainers have long considered Denny a must see, but they are happy to share a favorite son with those from away.

BRUCE MARSHALL - www.brucemarshall.com

FEATURE ARTISTS

RUPERT WATES - https://rupertwatesmusic.com/

Rupert Wates was born in London and studied at Oxford University. He has been a full time songwriter since the late 1990s, when he signed a publishing contract with Eaton Music Limited. In London he worked with some of the best performers in the city. Moving in 2001 to Paris, Wates formed his own quartet and began playing live regularly. In fall 2006 he came to the US. He is now based in New York City and Colorado. Since coming to the US, he has won more than 40 songwriting and performing awards (www.rupertwatesmusic.com/awards).

His music is an eclectic mix of acoustic, melodic art/folk, with flavors of jazz, vaudeville and cabaret. He has released nine solo CDs. They have received outstanding reviews in the international online press and tracks from them have been played on radio all over the world. In addition, Wates' songs have been covered by other artists in the UK, Canada and the US. Two full length tribute CDs to his material have been recorded: 'Crazy Puzzle' (2015) by Nashville-based performer Roxie Rogers, and 'Wide Open Heart' (July 2017) by Los Angeles vocalist Susan Kohler. Both these CDs were initiated and funded entirely by the artists themselves, and comprise exclusively songs taken from Rupert Wates' back catalog.

Of his latest CD release, "Full Circle" (January 2019), Rupert writes, "This CD is a return to my roots hence the title. It features just my voice and my guitar, recorded live, with no overdubs, and mostly in one take. Its intended partly as a form of homage to the artists I grew up listening to among them Leo Kottke, John Martyn, Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake who have made me the musician I am today. I hope its a worthy continuation of the fire they first set ablaze in me."

"An album to be treasured" 'His guitar playing is as good as it gets, matched by his skill as a songwriter...He is a brilliant lyricist with the ability to paint pictures in the listener's mind with subtle brushstrokes, all accompanied by some wonderful fingerstyle acoustic guitar work...'Ballad Of A Brown Eyed Girl' is a typical example of Rupert's outstanding musical skill and talent...All in all, this is an album that deserves to be treasured...'
