Shake Up the Status Quo 2020 B. Marshall, D. Cournoyer
We might get one chance in our lives to change the course of history; Future generations can learn. If we seize this moment etched in time to solve an age old mystery, why we left his earth crash and burn.
We gotta shake up the status quo, keep on testin’ the water, we can change our hearts

We might get one chance in our lives to change the course of history; Future generations can learn. If we seize this moment etched in time to solve an age old mystery, why we left his earth crash and burn.
We gotta shake up the status quo, keep on testin’ the water, we can change our hearts and minds, shake up the status quo.
So ditch that tired old party line, throw out last year’s model, the independent thinkers will cheer. But the old guard will keep hangin’ on, can’t lose their grip on power, ‘cause change is exactly what they fear. Chorus We gotta shake up the status quo, keep on testin’ the water, we can change our hearts and minds, shake up the status quo. Break up what you use to know and think outside the box. We can change, we can grow, shake up the status quo.
We should tear down this great divide, ‘ain’t no time to be pickin’ sides, the devil’s in the details when we do. It’s time to help your fellow man, the sooner we all understand, give it all you can muster you’ll get through.
We gotta shake up the status quo, keep on testin’ the water, we can change our hearts and minds, shake up the status quo. Break up what you use to know and think outside the box. We can change, we can grow, shake up the status quo.
If we blow our chance we could reside on the ash heap of history. There’s people who will say it’s nature’s way. Do we say goodbye to all we knew or will we turn the tide. There’s only one thing left that’s tried and true;
Chorus Shake up the status, quo. Break up the status quo. Shake up! What you use to know, Shake up the status quo. Shake up!

The latest Bruce Marshall Group CD, “Borrowed Time” features 12 songs that are all about the blues, from Jump to the Delta, the Band is smokin’ hot and the song craft is top notch. The single, “Caught in the Middle” sets the tone with a retro swing groove replete with a call and response chorus that draws the listener in. The title cut is a slow minor blues scorcher with lyrics that explore our fear of mortality and desire to live every day like it’s our last. “Borrowed Time” showcases the tasty fretwork of lead guitarist David Cournoyer, who also engineered and mixed the record.
One of the most compelling songs here is “Devil’s in the Delta” which features Marshall’s gutsiest vocal of the lot. He sings it with an urgency that conveys the hardship and pain felt by those who toiled in the Delta. An infectious acoustic guitar line balanced by Cournoyer’s down and dirty slide grabs you hook line and sinker.
Not a surprise to see this remake of Marshall’s ASCAP Award winning song “If Dreams Were Money”, featuring solos from Dave and Bruce. Recorded by two other artists, Michael Allman and Sonny Tackett, the band wanted to put a new stamp on one of Marshall’s earliest and well known originals.
Blues rock is the order of the day on “Overpaid My Dues”, a (true) story song about “chasin’a dream on the back of a song”. Steve Roberge sells this one on harmonica and the rhythm section of Pete Premo on drums and Glenn DiTommaso on bass drives it all home and throughout this record.
“Smooth Ride Up” is a soulful song with a chorus that stays with you long after you put the record down. Heavily requested at live shows, Denise Cascione does a masterful job on harmony vocals.
The band also included a gorgeous rendition of Santo and Johnny’s “Sleepwalk”, the only cover song in the collection. The guitars go surf here with soaring solos and Steve Roberge’s sax hammers it home.
“Borrowed Time” is a collection of songs from a songwriter in his 44th year of music making. Marshall feels blessed to have an audience still hungry for new music and a band that has honed their style and sound from decades on the road. These 12 songs will take you for a spin down some of those roads and it’s quite a ride!

The other day I listened to my “Kalispell” CD for the first time in years, in it’s entirety. Most songwriters don’t play their own stuff too much because we had to live and breathe those tracks for months when we recorded them. I know I’m biased but I have to say I’m damn proud of this record, it’s an engaging listen from song 1 through 15. The performances, production and engineering, all done by the band, is stellar throughout and it’s my high water mark creatively. I’m not taking anything away from my other CD’s but our fans constantly tell us this is their favorite BMG release.
With that in mind, we’ve decided to release a 10th anniversary edition of Kalispell this Monday, Dec. 1st. There will be a bonus track added, “Engine 54 Battalion 9”, the tribute to fallen 911 firefighters written by Bruce and Michelle Marshall. There’s also new artwork and graphics and eco friendly packaging. Lots of folks said they lost their original copy when they loaned it to a friend so here’s a chance to get a new one and some additional copies as gifts.
